The Masonry Method Of Refractory Bricks in Cement Kilns

Mar 20, 2026

There are several methods for laying refractory bricks in cement rotary kilns. Firstly, according to the different brick joints, the laying methods of refractory bricks in cement rotary kilns can be divided into two types: circumferential and staggered.

It is better to use bricks to build the cylinder in a circular manner. The advantage of ring masonry is that it is easy to build and dismantle, but it must ensure that the brick type and brick joint size meet the requirements. If the brick joints are too large, it is easy to cause misalignment, deformation, and even accidents such as drawing lots and falling bricks of the kiln lining. If the brick joints are too small, the lining bricks will be damaged prematurely due to excessive thermal stress during use. The main disadvantages of staggered masonry method are: firstly, difficulty in masonry and local repair; Secondly, for bricks with irregular dimensions and shapes, the quality of masonry is poor. At present, only some small rotary kilns with long maintenance cycles still use this method.

In addition to the two methods of circumferential and staggered masonry, it can also be divided into two methods: dry masonry and wet masonry.

Dry masonry refers to the main use of steel plates and lock bricks to build bricks for rotary kilns, but only a small amount of clay bricks are used when necessary. Wet masonry refers to mainly using clay bricks, with steel plates only used when locking the bricks.

In general, alkaline bricks are mostly dry laid. Especially for dolomite bricks, dry masonry can only be used due to their susceptibility to hydration. The advantages of dry masonry are fast masonry speed, but strict requirements for brick shape and size, poor overall lining material integrity, and easy stress concentration and crushing of bricks. So, when encountering irregular shapes in the kiln body or gaps caused by size errors in the brick shape, it is necessary to try to fill them with clay.

In general, aluminum silicon materials are often used for wet masonry. Due to its low coefficient of thermal expansion, it is more prone to drawing lots and falling bricks. So, it is necessary to use clay to bond the bricks and improve the overall integrity of the lining material. The use of high-strength phosphate fire clay for masonry is an effective measure to improve the overall integrity of aluminum silicon refractory materials and prevent drawing lots and falling bricks.
