Refractory Materials For Mixed Iron Furnaces For Hot Metal Pretreatment

Sep 21, 2023

A mixed iron furnace is a device that temporarily stores molten iron between the blast furnace and the converter to maintain a balance between the supply of molten iron from the blast furnace and the needs of the converter. The main function of a mixed iron furnace is to store the temperature and composition of molten iron and uniform molten iron. In order to ensure the temperature during tapping, the mixing furnace is usually equipped with an auxiliary burner for heating. The mixed iron furnace mainly consists of a furnace body, a furnace cover opening and closing mechanism, and a furnace body tilting mechanism. The furnace body is composed of a furnace shell, a support ring, an iron inlet, an iron outlet, and a brick lining inside the furnace.

Working environment of mixed iron furnace

The mixed iron furnace is mainly used for long-term storage of molten iron to maintain an appropriate smelting temperature. During operation, the temperature inside the mixed iron furnace is generally maintained at around 1350 ℃, and the furnace shell temperature is between 300~400 ℃. When injecting molten iron into the mixed iron furnace, due to the large drop, the molten iron will have a certain mechanical impact on the furnace lining. In addition, in order to maintain the temperature of the molten iron in the furnace, it is necessary to spray fuel for flame heating, which will also generate certain thermal stress on the lining material. Therefore, the lining material of the mixed iron furnace will be subjected to chemical erosion and infiltration of molten iron and slag, as well as temperature changes and thermal stress distributed inside the material. In addition, when the mixing furnace is tilted, the lining bricks of the furnace will also be greatly affected by mechanical factors due to their high quality.

The mixed iron furnace uses refractory materials

Based on the working environment and damage reasons of the mixed iron furnace, it can be analyzed that its requirements for refractory materials are high mechanical strength, strong slag resistance, good thermal shock resistance, low thermal conductivity, and little change in the reheating line. The refractory materials used include magnesium bricks, magnesium chromium bricks, high alumina bricks, clay bricks, and some refractory fillers. At the same time, due to the problem of local damage during the use of mixed iron furnaces, refractory spray coatings are generally used for repair. The materials used are determined based on the condition of the furnace lining masonry, including magnesium and aluminum magnesium.
