Composition And Characteristics Of Silicon Carbide Bricks

Apr 02, 2026

There are many varieties of refractory bricks, and the general price is around 5000 to 7000 per ton. However, there is one type of brick with a slightly higher price, which is silicon carbide brick. Its price is over 10000 per ton, which is 30% higher than ordinary refractory bricks. So why are silicon carbide refractory bricks so expensive? This is related to the rarity of raw materials, usage requirements, and production processes.

What is silicon carbide?

The silicon carbide in silicon carbide bricks refers to silicon carbide (SiC), which is made by high-temperature smelting of raw materials such as quartz sand, petroleum coke (or coal coke), sawdust (salt needs to be added when producing green silicon carbide) through a resistance furnace. Silicon carbide, due to its stable chemical properties, high thermal conductivity, low thermal expansion coefficient, and good wear resistance, is not only used as an abrasive but also in the production of refractory materials.

Silicon carbide is a type of carbide accidentally discovered by Acheson (an American) in the laboratory during the 1891 electric melting diamond experiment. At that time, it was mistakenly believed to be a mixture of diamond, so it was named diamond sand. In 1893, Acheson developed a method for industrial smelting of silicon carbide, commonly known as the Acheson furnace, which has been used to this day. The resistance furnace, which uses carbonaceous materials as the core body, heats a mixture of quartz SIO2 and carbon with electricity to produce silicon carbide.

What are the components of silicon carbide bricks?

Silicon carbide brick is a type of silicon carbide material formed by mixing high-purity silicon carbide coarse powder and highly active silicon carbide micro powder, injection molding, and vacuum sintering at a high temperature of 2450 ℃ to recrystallize. SiC is covalently bonded and does not exhibit the commonly referred sintering property. Instead, it achieves sintering by generating new phases through chemical reactions, known as reactive sintering.

Silicon carbide bricks are divided into clay bonded silicon carbide bricks, bonded silicon carbide bricks, silicon oxynitride bonded silicon carbide bricks, silicon nitride bonded silicon carbide bricks, Sialon bonded silicon carbide bricks, and recrystallized silicon carbide bricks according to their bonding methods.

Product Features

Silicon carbide bricks have good wear resistance, corrosion resistance, thermal stability, high strength, and high thermal conductivity. They can be used as lining materials for aluminum electrolytic cells, molten aluminum conduits, ceramic kilns, lower parts of large and medium-sized blast furnaces, waist and belly, aluminum refining furnace lining, zinc distillation tank lining, etc.
