What is Ladle Castable?

Ladle castable is a type of refractory castable specifically designed for steel ladles. It is mainly used for the lining of steel ladles, including the bottom, sidewalls, slag line and other parts. It is mainly composed of corundum, magnesium-aluminate spinel, and fused magnesia as the main raw materials, produced using micro-powder bonding technology and additives. It possesses excellent slag resistance, spalling resistance, thermal shock resistance, good strength and volume stability, as well as high refractoriness, strong corrosion resistance, high adhesion, low rebound, and easy gunning characteristics. In addition, ladle castable is easy to construct, can be rapidly baked without cracking, and is convenient for repair and demolition.

I. How to Choose Ladle Castable

When selecting ladle castable, in addition to considering its high-temperature performance, it is also necessary to consider the erosion of the ladle surface by slag. Therefore, the castable's corrosion resistance and thermal shock resistance should be evaluated. These are key factors affecting the overall service life of the ladle. For the permanent lining material of the ladle, its integrity during the campaign and the stability of its thermal insulation performance should also be considered.

II. Application Scope of Ladle Castable

In addition to being used in ordinary steel ladles, refining ladles, electric furnace ladles, etc., to prevent high-temperature molten steel and slag from eroding the ladle and to prevent breakout accidents, ladle castable can also be used in metallurgical industrial furnaces, and is widely used in furnace kilns and thermal equipment in industries such as petroleum, chemical, building materials, electric power, and machinery.

III. Construction Precautions for Ladle Castable

Strictly control the water addition amount and mixing time during the mixing process to ensure the appropriate consistency required for construction. If the castable is too thin, the performance of the material will be severely impaired. For each batch of mixing, the amount of castable, mixing time, and water addition should remain consistent to avoid alternating consistency. If the consistency of the mix does not meet the requirements, it should be returned to the mixer and adjusted by adding an appropriate amount of water or dry material. It is strictly prohibited to add water arbitrarily during the construction process.

Adopt the process flow of dry mixing first and then wet mixing. After the castable is put into the mixer, dry mix it for 2 minutes first. Then, add water amounting to approximately 5.2% to 5.5% of the total weight. Add water while mixing: first add 80% of the water, then add the remaining water in a timely manner according to the consistency of the mixture (be sure to use clean tap water and avoid using wastewater). The wet mixing stage lasts for 4 minutes, and the entire mixing process should not be less than 6 minutes until the castable is uniformly mixed and a slurry appears on the surface. Generally, the castable used for the bottom should be slightly drier, while that for the sidewalls should be slightly thinner (the above water addition amounts are reference values).

The mixing operation should be carried out after the castable is unpacked on-site, and the mixing quantity should be determined according to the capacity of the mixer. Ensure the castable is accurately weighed and poured into the mixer.

The construction of refractory materials should use a forced-action mixer for mixing. During the mixing process, it is strictly prohibited to mix in packaging bags, rope ends, or other debris, so as not to affect the casting effect and ultimate performance.
