Calculation Method For Flowability Of Refractory Castables

A technical indicator for determining the flowability of refractory castables. The flowability test can identify the flowability and stability of the casting material, and to some extent reflect the workability of the casting material. The pouring material should have corresponding fluidity depending on the construction method. However, the construction performance of castables with the same fluidity can still differ significantly. Refractory slurry should also have corresponding flowability depending on the construction method, climatic conditions, bonding materials, etc.

The main equipment for measuring fluidity is a jumping table with a diameter of 750mm. During the experiment, a truncated cone tube with a height of 127mm, an upper diameter of 171mm, and a lower diameter of 254mm was placed at the center of the jumping table. The mixed casting material was placed in two layers and covered inside the tube. Then, the cone tube was removed and jumped 15 times at a speed of once per second to expand the casting material on the table. The expanded diameter D (mm) was measured. Calculate the fluidity Fl according to the following formula:

Jumping also causes segregation of the casting material. If the cohesiveness of the casting material is poor, larger aggregate particles will be separated and move towards the edge near the jumping table; Very thin castables, slurries, or binders may flow away from the center and leave behind aggregates.

The determination of flowability of refractory castables in China is usually based on the "Method for Determining the flowability of Cement Mortar" (GB2419-81), which is similar in principle and operation to the above method, but with a smaller jumping table. After jumping, measure the expanded diameter of the mud bottom with a caliper. Take the average of two perpendicular diameters as the mud flowability at that water volume, expressed in millimeters.
