Zirconia has a sharp decrease in electrical resistivity at high temperatures and exhibits electrical semi conductivity. Heating elements made from stable zirconia can be used as heating elements when energized at high temperatures. Zirconia can also be used as a high-temperature solid electrolyte for high-temperature fuel cells, flue gas oxygen sensors, and steel liquid oxygen sensors. In addition, stable zirconia is processed into rod-shaped or appropriately fine particle materials, which can be used for flame spraying or plasma spraying as high-temperature ceramic coatings.
