Cement blanket is a composite material composed of cement and fibrous fabric. It is typically stored and transported in rolled form, and unfolded and moistened with water to solidify during use, forming a thin yet sturdy cement layer. The material was originally designed to simplify the complex processes involved in traditional concrete construction and to provide a faster and more convenient alternative.
The cement blanket consists mainly of three layers: the top layer is a weather-resistant fibrous fabric, the middle layer contains a dry mixture of cement powder, and the bottom layer is a supportive backing material. When water is added, the cement powder in the middle layer is activated, undergoes a hydration reaction, and gradually hardens into a strong cement layer. The entire process requires no large machinery-only basic tools and manual labor are needed for installation.
Compared to traditional concrete construction, cement blankets offer several distinct differences. Conventional methods require on-site mixing of cement, sand, aggregate, and water, followed by pouring, leveling, and curing-a process that is time-consuming and highly susceptible to weather conditions.

Cement blankets simplify these steps, significantly reducing both construction time and labor. The thickness of cement blankets is typically around 1 cm, whereas traditional concrete layers are usually thicker, which influences both their applications and performance.
Among the advantages of cement blankets, portability and ease of use stand out. Their rolled form makes them lightweight and easy to transport and store. During construction, they only need to be unrolled and watered, requiring no specialized skills. This makes them ideal for temporary or emergency projects, such as field operations or disaster relief, where rapid deployment is needed to provide temporary ground stabilization or protection. Another advantage is their flexibility, allowing them to conform to irregular terrain with minimal site preparation.
In terms of applications, cement blankets are commonly used for temporary roads, slope protection, ditch lining, or small-scale construction projects. They are not suitable for load-bearing structures or long-term high-stress environments, such as foundations for large buildings. In contrast, traditional concrete is better suited for structural applications such as building frames or bridges, where strength and long-term durability are critical.
