Salt precipitation problem of refractory castables during use

Salt precipitation on the surface of refractory castables is another important factor that exacerbates the structural damage of castables. During the curing or natural drying process of refractory castables, as water evaporates, some salts such as soluble carbonates, sulfates, chlorides, and phosphates concentrate on the surface of refractory castables and crystallize. This phenomenon is often referred to as salting out.
When water evaporates from the surface of refractory castables, these ions migrate and aggregate with water molecules from the interior of the castables to the surface, or react with acidic gases in the air on the surface of the castables. The salts formed by hydrate reactions are concentrated on the surface, and these salts crystallize and precipitate due to exceeding the solubility of water.
In fact, all soluble salts containing crystal water, including chlorides, sulfates, carbonates, etc., undergo a process of crystal water removal, accompanied by changes in crystal morphology and volume. This is one of the reasons for the surface structure pulverization, peeling, and blockage of castables during solidification in air.
