Performance Comparison Of Thermal Insulation Materials For Glass Kiln Regenerators

In the heat storage chamber of glass kilns, commonly used insulation materials include lightweight clay bricks, aluminum silicate fiber boards, lightweight calcium silicate boards, and insulation coatings. The evaluation of the insulation effect of the above four materials cannot be based solely on the data provided by the manufacturer, nor can the thermal conductivity of several materials be simply measured and compared. The most convincing approach should be to use the same thickness and area of the above-mentioned materials for insulation at the same position on the exterior wall of the heat storage chamber, and then evaluate the insulation effect of the insulation project by testing the surface temperature and heat dissipation loss of the insulation material according to GB/T8174-1897. The original plan was to conduct the above experiment on site in the melting workshop, but it was later found that due to frequent flame reversals in the kiln, the temperature inside the heat storage chamber continued to change (belonging to an unstable temperature field), coupled with various factors such as ambient temperature and unstable airflow, the measured data became meaningless and could not reflect the true heat dissipation loss of the kiln.

Based on the above reasons, we have established a simulation device for a heat storage chamber in the laboratory (see Figure 1), which is a single-sided open insulated box with relatively stable medium temperature, ambient temperature, and airflow, and has little impact on the test results. It is approximately a one-dimensional stable temperature field within the coverage range of the heat flux meter.

All four samples were made into 230mm × 230mm × 65mm boards and sealed alternately at the opening of the insulation box for testing.
